Die Folge: Nur in etwa fünf Prozent der privaten Haushalte waren im Jahr 1999 die intelligenten Lebensretter vorhanden. 

Inzwischen sind auch hierzulande schon 36 Prozent der privat genutzten Wohnungen mit den Warngeräten ausgestattet (Forsa-Umfrage 2006). Dennoch sind zum Vergleich weitere Zahlen anzuführen: In Groß- britannien und den USA liegt die Abdeckung der privaten Wohngebäude zwischen 75 bis 90 Prozent.

Einige Bundesländer verpflichten in ihren Landesbauordnungen mittlerweile Bauherren dazu, Neubauten mit Rauchwarnmeldern auszustatten. Heute haben bereits sieben Bundesländer wie Hessen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern und Thüringen eine Rauchmelderpflicht für private Wohnräume. In einigen Bundesländern gilt zudem eine Nachrüstpflicht für Bestandsbauten. In Mecklenburg- Vorpommern müssen deshalb bis Ende dieses Jahres alle bestehenden Wohnungen be equipped with smoke detectors. Schleswig-Holstein runs until the end of 2010 after, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse to the end of 2012 to 2014. Hessen is solely responsible for installation with a demand of around eight million smoke detectors in the next five years to be expected.
